Afghanistan wishes Israel a Happy New Year!

"L’Shanah Tovah, Tikatevu." Happy New Year to Israel. On this day of Rosh Hashanah, President Barack Obama along with Prime Ministers David Cameron and Stephen Harper renew their solidarity with Israel. On behalf of the freedom-loving people of Afghanistan and all Afghan Zionists in the Diaspora, I want to congratulate all Jews/Israelis on this festive occasion. For you are an inspiring nation that rose from the ashes after enduring a turbulent millennium in exile and created a formidable state, that is today the envy of the world, despite being the scapegoat of numerous goats who persist to undermine you and annihilate your rich civilization. As Harper said about Israel today: “It is a story, essentially, of a people whose response to suffering has been to move beyond resentment and build a most extraordinary society...You have taken the collective memory of death and persecution to build an optimistic, forward-looking society." As a homosexual who's been the victim of homophobia and whose predecessors suffered with you during the Holocaust and for thousands of years before then, I loathe Antisemitism. And as an Afghan whose matrilineal lineage is claimed to be a Lost Tribe originating from Israel's United Monarchy, I feel a profound connection with you. I'm so proud of your accomplishments in academia and the arts, in science and technology and for your disproportionate commitment to spreading philanthropy and service around the world. You are a model nation and one that I wish Afghanistan will look up to and replicate so that we, too, can become indispensible and immortal like you. Now, with Dr. Ashraf Ghani as the new President of Afghanistan, there is hope for the establishment of cross-cultural linkages between our two countries and my happiest day (other than my anticipated gay wedding) will be when your newest and largest diplomatic mission in the world is erected in downtown Kabul with consulates in Herat, Jalalabad, Kandahar and Mazar-e-Sharif. At the ribbon-cutting ceremony when the Embassy of Israel, Afghanistan is inaugurated, I hope to be alive and present for the joyous day when a new and enduring friendship is formed. An unknown secret is that while Afghans publicly favor Shakira, deep in our hearts we are all Ishtar lovers. Perhaps the Alabina band can perform for us in Kabul so that Afghans and Israelis and all of our allies can eat halal/kosher food and drink and dance until wee hours of the morning. And may an oversized Israeli flag proudly rise over the skies of downtown Kabul and the Star of David comfortably and forever flap in the gushing winds for all Afghans to see and remember our historical Jewish connections and affirm our commitment to a reliable ally and strategic partner that is worthy of our trust.
