Afghan media condemns Islam, calls for gay rights!

It’s a shining moment in Afghanistan. For the past week, I’ve been singing praises to the bravery demonstrated by AJ Ahwar and the staff at Afghan Express newspaper for publishing an opinion piece that chastised Islam as a parochial religion and highlighted the persecution of Hazaras and homosexuals. We, Afghanistan's LGBTIQ community, agree. The right of a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersexual, and questioning Afghan is no different than that of a Hazara girl or heterosexual Muslim man. We were all creaed to be equal. Undoubtedly, Afghanistan's underground homosexual population is far greater than the country's Hazara community. In my humble opinion, the only way to break the exploitative male Pashtun-Sunni Islam dominance is for all ethnic and religious minorities to develop a feminist ethos and wholeheartedly support gay rights. A joint coalition comprising of Afghan homosexuals, Hazaras and women will certainly overturn the Islamic order and form a secular democracy that is free from instituionalized discrimination; a system that is meritocratic (whereby awards are performance-based), where liberty is the highest order (whereby individuals can pursue whatever enterprise they envision) and public servants are paid to serve the national interest, first and foremost. This imagined Afghanistan is within our reach!
