Dear Ladies & Gentleman,
It is with much excitement that I announce the launch of WEYAR (meaning “pride” in Pashto); the first and flagship organization working towards the economic empowerment and social equality of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, and Asexual (LGBTIQA) citizens of Afghanistan. We are currently in the process of registering our nonprofit in the United States with the intention of expanding operations throughout Afghanistan. Topping our agenda will be the decriminalization of apostasy and homosexuality in Afghanistan and ensuring that apostates and LGBTI persons are recognized and protected under the law.
To put things into perspective how far we’ve come in just two years. In 2013, when I came out of the closet and ratcheted up the campaign for LGBTI rights, Afghanistan, according to a Pew study, was the most parochial society in the planet with an astounding 99 percent of the population favoring Sharia Law. Today, these numbers are dropping. Large swaths of the Afghan population in Afghanistan and the Diaspora have learned about LGBTI rights as a fundamental human right and centuries of institutionalized homophobia are now being dismantled by our growing network of worldwide activists. By achieving sexual liberation in Afghanistan, we can bring freedom and equality to the entire East where the political war over gay culture has just begun.
